“I’d rather be reading Jane Austen”
I know it’s blurry and dark, but I had to get a picture of Charlie in his Jane Austen shirt. They’ve heard me answering the phone “Jane Austen Books, this is Amy” so often that 75% of the time, when Colin picks up a toy phone, he calls “Jane Austen” to “see how she’s doin!” I was heading out the door to a JASNA meeting the other day wearing a pin with her portrait on it. They asked me whose picture it was, and when I told them they gasped with excitement “ooooh, JAAANE AAUUUSTEENNN.”
One of these days they’ll find out she’s just some dead lady their mom writes about. And it probably won’t be as exciting for them when they have to move 3,000 books onto grandma’s truck. But for now I greatly enjoy watching their little faces light up with excitement over Dear Jane, and I know it’s only because they see how important she is to their mommy. That’s like true love or somethin’.
And just for some background on the shirt – it was given to me as a hand-me-down by a good friend in JASNA. She bought it at the 2008 AGM for her kid who has since outgrown it. That’s very significant to me, however, because the 2008 AGM was our first as Jane Austen Books, and Colin’s first as my little Mr. Darcy.

Colin wore it so much it’s almost worn through already. He called it his Jane Austen shirt, but I think Charlie only wanted to wear it because it’s red.
